Other treatment options

Neurosurgeons and their treatment teams have a number of options to offer a patient when it comes to treating brain conditions.
These include:
- Traditional surgery using a scalpel and requiring general anaesthetic
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy for malignant tumours
- Targeted drug therapy and
- Radiosurgery
Radiosurgery
There are three types of radiosurgery. Each type uses different equipment and radiation sources. As well as Gamma Knife surgery, these include the Linear accelerator (LINAC) and Proton beam therapy. Proton beam therapy is not available in South Africa.
